Ancient days were filled with music. TV’s, DVD’s, stereos and such didn’t exist. The ZITHER was possibly the third most common instrument on the face of the earth, after the harp and drum. A simple slim box with strings stretched across its soundboard, it was an instrument that was portable, durable and well used in a time of simple pleasures.

Over the centuries many instruments came and went, fading into history. Today, we find all kinds of electronic musical instruments - usually very versatile and loud. But many seek to embrace the acoustic voice of time-honored easier-to-play instruments. The Master Works ZITHER may be just what you’ve been searching for.

Scales, a series of consecutive tones following a certain pattern of half and whole steps (definition from “THE ULTIMATE HAMMER DULCIMER RESOURCE BOOK”), have always been the foundation of music. They vary from song to song and even from country to country and society to society. Playing within a diatonic or chromatic scale requires skill and memorization. The simple five-note scale (pentatonic scale) is a very versatile yet incredibly simple-to-utilize set of notes. In fact, when playing around for fun - not attempting to play a specific melody - it is impossible to hit a wrong note! Even a very small child can make beautiful music the first time they put their hands on a Master Works ZITHER. This is no exaggeration!
How is it played? Lay the instrument on a table, your lap or up against your shoulder. Pluck the strings with one hand – even a single finger or pick – in absolutely any order, including strumming, and listen to the beautiful music flow! It’s just that simple. It’s wonderful for the physically challenged. Many who consider themselves musically challenged suddenly enjoy music of their own. It works great for storytellers who need a source of simple-to-play background music. Kevin Roth has been doing concerts and workshops on the east coast for folks suffering from stress or dealing with pain management. The possibilities are endless. I certainly look forward to teachers utilizing this easy tool in elementary and early childhood development centers!

The scale we generally tune the instrument to is a “D” pentatonic scale. The notes are D, E, F#, A, and B. Other tunings include D, E, F, A, B or D, D#, G, A, A# or D, F, G, A, C or D, E, F#, A, C# or D, E, G, A, B or use your imagination. The instrument has sixteen strings ranging in gauges from .038 wound strings to .012 steel strings. The Master Works ZITHER is very light and portable weighing in at only 3.25 lbs. and only 23.5” long, 9.25” wide and 2.5” thick. A beautiful and functional carrying case is available to carry your new instrument in to make it even more transportable. There are no books available because you simply don’t need one!!!
