Evart, MI July 2008.
Have you ever dreamed of a hammer dulcimer heaven on earth? If so, you were just thinking about the largest and arguably the best dulcimer festival in the world located in the middle of Michigan. It is called “The Non-electrified Musical Funfest, or at least used to be. There are always several thousand fanatics in attendance (check out # 40) and hundreds of thousands of strings amazing close to pitch at once! The most unusual side of this activity must be the rule of no paid performers – just sign up and tune up. Folks start to show up 2 weeks in advance with tons of jamming. You never know who will show up to teach workshops or perform or just sit around and jam (check out # 62). This photo was taken from the back of the stage through a crack by Merla during the Saturday evening concert. Sort of gives you an idea of what we see when we’re on stage.
